Tigers' leap to fifth in table after comeback victory over Geylang

Balestier Khalsa jumped to fifth place in the league after mounting yet another comeback, this time downing Geylang United 2-1 in a pulsating match at the Toa Payoh Stadium on Thursday night.

Japanese ace Norikazu Murakami was the hero of the night for the Tigers as his double strikes gave Balestier all three points against the Eagles.

However, it was the Eagles who dominated proceedings and even took the lead in the 16th minute. Moroccan-Dutch playmaker Abdelaziz Dnibi lobbed the ball over a static Balestier defence and former national striker Fadzuhasni Juraimi's brilliantly looped his header over the stranded Tigers custodian Zulkifli Zainolabidin to make it 1-0.

That goal knocked the stuffing out of Balestier for a while and Abdelhadi almost scored a second for Geylang six minutes later but his curling free kick was well saved by Zainolabidin.

That miss spurred the Tigers into action and two minutes later, Balestier anchorman Nawfal Shahib's delicate effort was excellently tipped over the bar by Eagles national keeper Hassan Sunny after good work by Tigers playmaker Ryuji Sueoka.

Suddenly, Balestier began to get a brief grip on the game and Cameroonian midfielder Kaze Teffo Giscard should have equalized for the Tigers but he only managed to direct his header wide.

In the 35th minute, Tigers left back Juraimie Dawood wasted a good chance to haul the Tigers back into the game when he could only muster a header wide off the goal.

Despite a slew of half-decent chances, it was the Eagles who went into the break with a fairly comfortable lead.

Two minutes after the restart, Geylang nearly doubled their advantage. Eagles right-back Noh Rahman's pin point cross was firmly met by Englishman Kim Grant, but his header went an inch wide off the post.

However, Geylang soon paid the price for failing to capitalise on their chances. In the 66th minute, Tigers' Murakami's swivelled shot went past a sea of Eagles' defenders and into the back of the net following a scramble in the box.

That goal was the perfect tonic for the Balestier faithful, who were beginning to grow increasingly frustrated at their team's mediocre performance and it sparked the crowd back to life.

However, Grant nearly atoned for his earlier miss after brilliantly controlling a cross and smashing his powerful effort just over the bar, much to the relief of the Tigers.

A minute later, Balestier goalie Zainolabidin nearly embarrassingly cost his team all three points after fumbling a corner and the ball rolled just wide of the goal.

Balestier's resistance soon paid off in the 81st minute. Cameroonian Giscard skipped past a challenge on the byeline before relaying the ball to Murakami who was on hand to power an unstoppable shot into the corner and past the despairing dive of keeper Hassan Sunny.

The joy of the Toa Payoh faithful was unmistaken, epitomized by Tigers chief Abdul Karim Razzak's athletic leap and clenched fists to the Balestier fans.

There was nearly a twist to the saga as in the 86th minute, Hassan Sunny's massive goal kick evaded the entire Tigers defence and appeared to be heading over the stranded Zainolabidin who desperately tried to backtrack, only too see the ball crash against the upright and bounce out of play.

The frustration of Sunny was evident for all to see as he covered his hands on his face in despair and that summed up Geylang's night.

Tigers' coach Abdul Karim acknowledged his side's subdued first half performance but gave credit to his charges for the second half showing. He said, "In the first half, we were holding back too much but in the second half, we played our game and in the end Murakami scored two good goals."

He reserved special praise for two of his defensive stalwarts. Karim commented, "I thought Fathi Yunus and Juraimie Dawood were excellent today in covering up the spaces and defending."

His counterpart, Eagles supremo Lim Hong Tai cut a forlorn figure as he admitted his side deserved to lose and felt that they should have sealed the game before Murakami's goals. He said, "Balestier thoroughly deserved to win today but we should have taken our chances. But this is football and if you don't take your chances, you don't win."
